Minnesota Senate Contenders Clash Over Fraud and Public Safety

A political stronghold is facing uncomfortable questions, and one challenger is turning those questions into a direct attack.

Now, a costly scandal and mounting safety concerns could complicate an election Democrats have little room to take for granted.

Republican Michele Tafoya is targeting Minnesota Democrat Peggy Flanagan over massive fraud that unfolded during her tenure as lieutenant governor.

The Senate contenders clashed during last week’s debate, with Tafoya challenging Flanagan’s expressions of concern about Medicaid and SNAP.

“This historic fraud happened under her watch, and suddenly, she’s looking out for Medicaid and SNAP?” Tafoya asked.

“Sell it to someone else, Peggy,” she added.

The exchange captured the Republican’s central argument: officials responsible for overseeing government programs should answer for failures involving taxpayer money.

In a Fox News opinion column, Hugh Hewitt argued that message could help produce a major Republican Senate upset.

Hewitt praised Tafoya’s debate performance, calling the longtime NFL broadcaster American politics’ “rookie of the year.”

His assessment is a political forecast, with Tafoya still trailing rather than holding a demonstrated lead.

The financial stakes behind the campaign argument are enormous, even with the full extent of the fraud still estimated.

Hewitt cited a federal prosecutor’s estimate that fraud involving Minnesota spending could reach as much as $9 billion.

The column compared that amount with an annual state budget of approximately $67 billion and fewer than 6 million residents.

On that comparison, the estimated fraud approaches 15 percent of a single year’s budget.

For taxpayers, the accountability questions include how safeguards failed, who received warnings, and whether responsible officials acted.

Fraud also threatens the credibility of programs intended to serve vulnerable residents, making oversight part of protecting legitimate beneficiaries.

Flanagan served alongside Democratic Governor Tim Walz, leaving her defending an administration’s record while seeking a promotion to Washington.

Hewitt argued the scandal drove Walz’s decision to abandon his planned reelection campaign and now threatens Flanagan’s Senate bid.

He also criticized pandemic-era oversight, arguing permissive policies helped create conditions in which fraud could flourish.

That criticism places the administration’s management decisions at the center of the Republican case against continued Democratic leadership.

Public safety provides another pressure point following an October 2 shootout during a homecoming football game at Eden Prairie High School.

The game against Minnetonka High School was canceled, crowds were evacuated, and two youths were wounded, according to the column.

The violence occurred at Aerie Stadium in Eden Prairie, an affluent Twin Cities suburb with approximately 65,000 residents.

Tafoya highlighted that everyone arrested in the incident was released on bail within days, Hewitt wrote.

That release raises campaign questions about detention decisions and community safety, while arrests themselves do not establish guilt.

Hewitt described the confrontation as gang violence involving Somali-American youths.

Hewitt argued the shooting and fraud scandal have become major themes in Minnesota’s Senate coverage this month.

Together, they allow Tafoya to challenge both the administration’s stewardship of public money and its public safety record.

He also suggested an unmeasured anti-establishment vote could emerge outside downtown Minneapolis, presenting that possibility as speculation.

Flanagan’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party represents Minnesota’s political establishment in Hewitt’s telling, potentially making dissatisfaction with state government more consequential.

The column also criticized Flanagan’s repeated description of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza as “genocide,” Fox News reported.
