Listening to her describe those months gutted me. I’d wanted her to “learn how the real world works,” but all I’d really done was confirm her worst fear: that needing help made her a burden. Handing the envelope back felt like the smallest apology against a mountain of harm. We talked until the house no longer felt haunted, until “my rules” became “our plans.” She stayed. The note lives in my drawer, a reminder that the hardest grown-up lesson is admitting you were the one who needed to change.
