I Thought Weekly Was Normal—Until That Conversation

It started as one of those casual conversations you don’t think twice about. We were sitting there, laughing, talking about random daily habits when somehow the topic shifted to laundry. I mentioned, without hesitation, that I wash my pajamas once a week. Simple. Normal—or at least, that’s what I thought. But the way she looked at me immediately told me something was off. Not judgmental exactly… but definitely surprised.

She paused, blinked, and then said it. “Wait… only once a week?” The tone alone made my stomach drop slightly. I laughed it off at first, thinking she was joking. But she wasn’t. Not even close. She explained that she washes hers after every single use, no exceptions. That’s when the conversation stopped being casual. Suddenly, I wasn’t so sure my routine was as normal as I had always believed.

The more we talked, the more I started questioning everything. I had never really thought about it deeply—pajamas felt clean, they’re worn for sleeping, not exactly a full day outside. But she pointed out things I hadn’t considered. Body oils, sweat, how long they actually stay on your skin overnight. It wasn’t dramatic, but it was enough to make me pause and rethink something I had done the same way for years without a second thought.

Later that night, I found myself standing in front of my laundry basket, staring at the same pajamas I had planned to wear again. And for the first time, I hesitated. Not because I suddenly believed one way was right and the other was wrong—but because I realized how easily we assume our habits are universal. Something so small, so routine, suddenly felt like a decision instead of a default.

By the next day, I didn’t have a final answer—but I had something else instead. Awareness. Because sometimes it’s not about what’s “correct,” it’s about realizing there are different ways people live their everyday lives. And once you notice that, even the simplest habits can start to feel a little less automatic.
