The Date That Turned Into an Unexpected Invoice

When my friend Mia set me up with her boyfriend’s friend Eric, she assured me he was the kind of person every woman wanted to meet. On our first date, he arrived with roses, gave me a thoughtful little keychain, and carried himself like a classic gentleman. He pulled out my chair, kept me laughing, and paid for dinner without hesitation. I went home thinking it was one of the most romantic nights I’d ever had.

The next morning, I expected a sweet message from him, but instead I received something that left me stunned—a formal-looking invoice. Line by line, Eric had listed “charges” for everything from the flowers to dinner, even jokingly adding a fee for pulling out my chair. The “payment” he requested was a guaranteed second date. At the bottom, in bold letters, it read: Payment expected in full. No refunds.

I forwarded the invoice to Mia, who showed her boyfriend Chris. Instead of getting upset, Chris created a parody invoice in response, “charging” Eric for introducing us and declaring the payment to be a permanent block. We sent it back, and Eric quickly flooded my phone with explanations about how it was all meant to “set expectations.” I gave him a simple thumbs-up emoji and ended contact.

Although the situation was frustrating at first, it soon became a story that made us laugh for years. I learned an important dating lesson that night: when someone insists on paying, it should come from generosity, not from expecting something in return. And as for the little keychain he gave me? I kept it—not as a symbol of romance, but as the funniest souvenir from one of the strangest dates I’ll never forget.
