Our hearts are with Susan Lucci

This actress wasn’t born into wealth. If circumstances had been different, she might have been a beauty pageant winner. However, a medical condition reappeared years later, prompting her to speak out. Despite facing these challenges, she maintained her beauty and resilience after losing her husband.

Family and Education

Born to a nurse, Jeanette, and a construction contractor, Victor, this actress was the youngest child in her family. As an all-American girl, she excelled in school as an honor student and cheerleader. She later studied drama at Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, where she became a New York State finalist in the Miss Universe pageant. However, her exams conflicted with the finals, and her father insisted she focus on her degree instead.

Despite this sacrifice, she shared her love for her late father, celebrating him through social media. In 2015, she posted a throwback photo of them dancing on Instagram, expressing how much she missed him. “He was the best father a girl could ever have,” she wrote. In 2019, she shared another photo, honoring his WWII service and the life lessons he taught her, from ice skating to horseback riding.

Facing Challenges and Triumphs

The actress who gave up Miss Universe to pursue a degree is Susan Lucci. In her 2011 memoir, All My Life: A Memoir, she opened up about personal challenges, including miscarriages, the death of her father, and her husband’s prostate cancer battle. Despite these hardships, Lucci continued to push forward.

Health Struggles

Lucci faced heart disease, undergoing her first surgery in 2019. Her main artery was 90% blocked, requiring two stents. Years later, she had another emergency heart procedure in 2022. Afterward, she shared her health battles openly to encourage women to listen to their bodies. Despite initially feeling embarrassed about her symptoms, she spoke up after her second surgery, revealing how she felt pain in her ribcage, back, and jaw.

With her husband’s encouragement, she sought medical help, ultimately surviving a heart scare. Her doctor emphasized the importance of reacting early to symptoms to prevent heart attacks.

Loss and Moving Forward

In March 2022, her husband, Helmut Huber, passed away at 84. Reflecting on their partnership, Lucci described him as the “love of my life.” Even ten months after his death, she wasn’t ready to date again. Though grieving, she continued to find strength from her fans and her own resilience.

Life After Helmut Huber

In 2023, Lucci shared an Instagram post celebrating her friend Josephine’s birthday, where fans admired her beauty. At 76, Lucci still stunned audiences with her elegance, proving her strength. Even after celebrating her 75th birthday in December 2022, often a quieter occasion due to its proximity to Christmas, Lucci shared a beach video, looking stunning in a strapless one-piece swimsuit.

A Lasting Legacy

Known best for her role as Erica Kane on All My Children, Lucci has been a daytime drama icon since 1970. Describing her character as “the kind you love to hate,” Lucci’s influence extends beyond television. She’s appeared in films like Ebby (1995) and Joy (2015), as well as in series such as Devious Maids and Hot in Cleveland. Her enduring presence in entertainment continues to inspire fans worldwide.
